Cathedral Safeguarding Officer
We are looking to appoint a Cathedral Safeguarding officer to join the Cathedral team. The Cathedral Safeguarding Officer will maintain and build on the Cathedral's strong culture of safeguarding, promote awareness and understanding across the Cathedral community, and be responsible for the development and implementation of Cathedral safeguarding arrangements, good practice, policy and training.
The role carries responsibility for safeguarding casework, including ensuring that allegations of abuse are promptly and appropriately handled, and where appropriate referred to the statutory authorities. Further, the role holder will effectively communicate and engage with survivors and victims of abuse.
The Cathedral Safeguarding Officer will advise the Cathedral on all safeguarding matters ensuring that all advice is in line with the law, government guidance and national policy and guidance from the House of Bishops. They will work collaboratively with the Diocese and the National Safeguarding Team. This includes playing a leading role in the preparation for the upcoming INEQE safeguarding audit of Southwark Cathedral and Southwark Diocese scheduled June 2026
Working Hours: 3 days (21 hours per week)
Salary: £30,000 (£50,000 pro rata)

Member of FAC (Fabric Advisory Committee)
The Care of Cathedrals Measure requires the Fabric Advisory Committee to be an independent body whose role is to advise Chapter and determine Chapter’s applications on the care, conservation, repair and development of the cathedral, its setting and any significant objects it holds. The Grade I Listed status of Southwark Cathedral and the complexity of its busy SE1 context demands an experienced and lively FAC membership. We are seeking new members for the new quinquennium, commencing in Spring 2026, in which period the Cathedral hopes to deliver significant and exciting projects in line with the new vision.
We are currently seeking assistance from those with expert knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Conservation Architect
- Ecclesiastical furniture (design and associated crafts)
- Archives, libraries, collections experiences and inventory management
- Sustainable MEP, Lighting and the implementation of Net Zero Carbon solutions in the heritage environment
- Master planning and planning experience (including public realm)
- The Cathedrals Measure, policies and procedures
- Access and interpretation in the historic setting
- Visitor Engagement Plan and events management in the historic setting
- Project Management in the historic setting
- Structural Engineer in listed buildings and historic settings
- Artist / Designer
- Collections, presentations, displays and museums in the historic setting
This is a voluntary role for 5 years. The committee meets at least four times a year on a weekday for 2 hours. There is the possibility of being a ‘Participant Observer’ for 1 year only if you wish to understand better the working context of the FAC.
