Canon Richard Hearn RIP
It was with real sadness that we learnt of the death of Canon Richard Hearn, Dean of St George’s Roman Catholic Cathedral, Southwark, on the evening of Thursday 7 October
Richard was a great priest, friend and wise counsellor and has been a member of the Cathedral Council for many years. He had a passion for ecumenical relations and an understanding of the workings of the Church of England from his time as a Prison Chaplain working in multi-denominational teams.
On 11 December he was present in the Cathedral for the celebration of St Thomas Becket. The Archbishop of Canterbury was present and Canon Richard carried into the cathedral a relic of Becket. It was a wonderful occasion which Richard had helped to create. The Bishop of Southwark, the Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, himself a member of the Cathedral Council with Richard, commenting on his death expressed his appreciation and deep regard for him.
The close relations between our two cathedrals is as a result of Richard’s contribution and character. He is a friend we will greatly miss and a priest for whom we give thanks.
May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
