Founded in 2003, the Merbecke Choir was established to give ex-choristers from Southwark Cathedral a place to continue singing. Today, it has grown to include other singers, many of whom are former university choral scholars or have sung in church choirs previously. The Merbecke Choir is unique, being the only amateur chamber choir attached to a London cathedral.
Named after the 16th-century theologian and musician John Merbecke, who was tried for heresy at Southwark Cathedral, the choir reflects a rich history while embracing a broad and ambitious musical repertoire. The choir performs a wide range of music, from early European liturgical music to contemporary works, including new commissions.
As part of Southwark Cathedral’s music department, the Merbecke Choir sings monthly complines and other eucharistic devotions during term time. The choir also performs three concerts throughout the year - at Christmas, during Passiontide, and in the summer – and also delivers ad hoc concerts and tours.
The choir is currently directed by Emily Elias, who has been at the helm since 2016, continuing a line of brilliant leadership since it was founded in 2003 by Ian Keatley. Through its diverse programmes and commitment to high musical standards, the Merbecke Choir continues to enrich the worship and cultural life of Southwark Cathedral.
