Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and prayer leading up to Easter. On Ash Wednesday, ashes are placed on the head in the shape of a cross, accompanied by the words ‘remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return: turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ” – a reminder of our mortality but also of our hope rooted in God’s unswerving love
