Southwark Cathedral are delighted to be part of London Square Open Gardens weekend 2023

This secret riverside garden, just beside the Globe Theatre, belongs to the Dean of Southwark's private residence and dates back to 1712. Hidden away from neighbouring bustling tourist areas, it has become a tranquil wildlife haven.  The Deanery garden has been planted with mature shrubs, trees and herbaceous plants and is tended by the Cathedral's gardener, Mark Gibbons.

We are delighted to be joined on the day by mudlark, poet and best-selling author Tom Chivers who will be displaying a selection of his Thames foreshore finds as well as signing copies of his majestic London Clay: Journeys in the Deep City.  Historian and author Margaret Willes will also be joining us to sign copies of her recent publication In the Shadow of St. Paul's Cathedral: The Churchyard that Shaped London.

Classic FM's Anne-Marie Minhall and local illustrator Rosie Brooks will be on hand to sign copies of their recent God Save the King - A Guide to the National Anthem book which was published just before the recent coronation of His Majesty King Charles III. This beautifully illustrated book features many familiar landmarks in Bankside and London.

We are also delighted that acclaimed harpist Milo Harper will be playing soothing sounds in the garden between 1pm - 2pm, and the Cathedral Merbecke Chamber Choir will be singing between 2pm - 3pm.

Tasty refreshments will be on sale on the day provided by The Friends of Southwark Cathedral.

Access to this small garden and the next dooor at garden at Cardinal's Wharf, one of the most historic houses in London is via historic Cardinal Cap Alley, which is very narrow. 

Tickets for the day are available from the London Parks and Gardens website and your ticket for the day allows you to explore over 100 unique and hidden green spaces which are not normally accessible to the public, including historic, traditional, contemporary and experimental gardens across the capital. These include formal squares and rooftop terraces with commanding city views, as well as community allotments and wildlife havens.

Visitor numbers may have to be restricted at busy times.
