Join us at The Big Cathedral Knit for a cosy day of knitting, chatting, and creating beautiful blankets for people in unstable housing

Help knit and crochet blankets for people experiencing houselessness across London.

Welcome to The Big Cathedral Knit! Grab your knitting needles and join us at Southwark Cathedral on Saturday 17 August between 10am - 4pm for a day of fun and creativity.

Whether you're a beginner or an experienced maker, everyone is welcome to come together and work on their projects in this beautiful setting. Share tips, learn new techniques, and enjoy the company of fellow knitting and crochet enthusiasts.

It’s a relaxed and welcoming drop-in knitting and crochet group, open to beginners and experienced makers of all ages to come together, connect, learn more about the crafts and their radical history.

The Big Cathedral Knit is a knitting and crochet marathon workshop by Craft Forward and hosted at Southwark Cathedral.

Knitters will be producing 20x20cm knitted and crocheted squares to go towards Blankets for London - Craft Forward’s seasonal project where they assemble blankets to donate to unhoused individuals in London through partner charities.

All materials are provided, but if you are an experienced knitter or crocheter, please bring your own knitting needles or crochet hook (and spare yarn if you have any). If you are a beginner, come along and we will help you start your crafting journey.

We will also be collecting yarn donations on the day, so be sure to come with unwanted yarn you'd like to donate.

Southwark Cathedral is a proud supporter of Catcuddles, a registered charity that is all about promoting and strengthening the feline-human bond and helping pair up unwanted cats with loving forever homes and humans. We'll be accepting cat food donations on the day to add to their cat food bank.

Craft Forward

Established in 2021, Craft Forward is a not-for-profit that provides accessible, creative, experiences suitable for everyone, regardless of their skills and background. Threads Through Creation

The Big Cathedral Knit is an event to mark the display of our Threads Through Creation exhibition by textile artist Jackie Parkinson. Threads through Creation is a spectacular sequence of twelve huge textile panels. It’s an exuberant retelling of the creation story in the book of Genesis, a retelling which many visitors will find both moving and breathtaking. Viewers are treated to a wonderful variety of colours, shapes, patterns – and of course lots of creatures! Threads Through Creation will be on display at the Cathedral from 20 July - 26 August.
