Evensong attended by High Sheriffs
A special service marking the start of the legal year.
Yesterday evening, Southwark Cathedral hosted a service of Choral Evensong to bring together, give thanks for, and recognise all those who administer law and order in Greater London. The service, which was attended by representatives from the courts, police and this year’s charities marked the start of the legal year.
This year’s High Sheriff is Millicent Grant KC(Hon). The office of High Sheriff is the oldest secular office under the Crown and there have been High Sheriffs for at least 1000 years. Today, the High Sheriff of Greater London is the sovereign’s representative for the judiciary and the wider justice system in Greater London and reflects the historic links of sheriffs to the administration of justice, law, and order. The office is an independent, unpaid and non-political one.
