'Ed Davey is living proof that sometimes the personal and the political can mix in a way that benefits society as a whole.' Alastair Campbell
Join Sir Ed Davey MP and the Very Rev'd Dr Mark Oakley, Dean of Southwark as they discuss Ed Davey's book Why I Care and Why Care Matters.
Care is a thread that weaves itself into the fabric of our society. It’s something Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, knows intimately. His new memoir, Why I Care and why care matters, explores how being a carer has shaped his life and values, and how for Ed and for the legions of carers across the UK, the politics is personal.
Aged only four, Ed lost his father to cancer. When his mother also became ill, Ed and his brothers nursed her at home until she died when Ed was just 15. Now, he and his wife care for their son John, who has severe physical and learning disabilities, as well as raising their younger daughter.
Weaving emotional stories from Ed's life together with thoughtful analysis and powerful testimonies from carers across the country, Why I Care paints an authentic picture of life for millions of people in Britain today and offers a wake-up call for what more can be done to support those who are the backbone of our society.
Because this isn't just Ed's story. It's the story of all of us.
