The group asked well-known pianist and arranger Øystein Lund Olafsen to be the musical director. A large part of the group already had the connection with Kristen Idrettskontakt, KRIK, and the choir was long referred to as the KRIK choir. Today the choir is an independent choir, holding rehearsals and auditions in the Lutheran Evangelical Church at Bislett, Oslo.
Øystein Lund Olafsen is both conductor and orchestra leader, and under his direction, the choir has achieved a remarkable level of musicality. They have released 3 CD projects, all of which have enjoyed brisk sales and glowing reviews. They are constantly learning new repertoire and have also had frequent visits by well known gospel artists from Los Angeles and Nashville to share material and technique with HIM.
HIM has not only grown in repertoire, but in reputation. In the years 2009 - 2012, HIM has been the special guest choir at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards Concert. Not only have they sung their own songs but have accompanied an A-list of musical artists at the concert such as Jada P. og Will Smith, Wyclef Jean, Esperanza Spalding, India.Arie, Herbie Hancock, Robyn, Colbie Caillat, Jamiroquai, David Gray, Ellie Goulding, Angelique Kidjo and Seal. The 2010 Nobel Celebration found them singing with Florence Welch, or Florence and the Machine, and Barry Manilow. Mr. Manilow, in his graciousness, has asked HIM to join him at his in Las Vegas show when they are in the U.S.
2010 also found HIM on tour with Stevie Wonder. Mr. Wonder took a keen interest in the choir, joining them after the concerts in their dressing room, and bringing in his keyboard to accompany them on his favorite gospel songs. He has also extended an invitation to HIM to visit him when they are in Los Angeles and invited them to join him on a CD project.
Josh Groban also borrowed the blessed voices of HIM at two of his Oslo concerts.
HIM toured in the U.S. in 2005 & 2009 with rave reviews and return invitations to Nashville's First Lutheran Cathedral, Woodbine Methodist, and The Seaman's Church in New York City, just to name a few.
2012 they toured the U.S. in support of their newest release "This Is Christmas". The tour took them to Nashville and New York. And they went back in 2019 to also add Chicago to their tour list before returning to Nashville for the 4th time
"HIM is focused to convey a special message when we sing. Gospel is not just about singing on a high musical level, it's all about the glad tidings, and the dissemination of this. The singing has become a special form of worship for us in HIM. We have a commitment, and an inspiration, and we are very grateful".
Celebrating 25 years in ministry, they’re travelling to London in September, joining The Norwegian Church for a concert and service, and to stop for a recital at the lovely Southwark Cathedral. We’d love to see you there!
