About James
James began his organ career whilst still a chorister at HM Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, and was subsequently appointed Junior Organ Scholar at age 14. This year he was promoted to Senior Organ Scholar and continues to play for the weekly services there. Elsewhere he has played for services at St Giles in the Fields and Our Lady of Victories churches in London, St David’s Cathedral, Buckfast Abbey, and weekly masses at school.
He has attended the yearly week-long Oundle for Organists course several times, studying with leading organists including Peter Wright, Francesca Massey and Martin Baker, and playing various organs in the area and at Cambridge colleges. Other masterclasses attended include with Daniel Moult at the Barnes Music Festival and with Gerard Brooks at Notre Dame de France church in London. Competitions include the London Organ Club (Junior & Senior) and taking first prize in the organ final of the annual school music competition three times. This year he was awarded the Oundle recitalist award.
James has performed several times with St James’ Baroque as soloist in Handel’s organ concerto in F and as harpsichordist in Messiah in London and at Douai Abbey, Reading. He gave his debut recital at St Mary’s, Haverfordwest in 2022 and has performed as organist in Faure’s Requiem at both HM Chapel Royal, Hampton Court, and Our Lady of Victories, Kensington. He is the accompanist and organist for Cantus8, a school based chamber choir, and has recently performed as pianist in Brahms’ Piano Quintet. James also sings with his school’s Schola Cantorum liturgical choir, having recently completed a music tour to Spain, and has previously sung at the Royal Opera House, English National Opera, in St Thomas Kirche Leipzig, Ely Cathedral and Nidaros Cathedral Trondheim.
James studies organ with Iestyn Evans at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in London, having just completed his ARSM Diploma exam, and future plans include a recital in July in Zwolle, Holland and playing in Manchester Cathedral.
