Welcoming a New Dean's Verger

We are delighted to announce the appointment of Simon Gutwein as our new Dean's Verger.

Following Paul Timms’ forthcoming retirement on 6 July, the Cathedral has appointed Simon Gutwein as his successor as Dean’s Verger.

Simon has worked as a Verger at the Cathedral for 17 years, and for 13 years he has been the Deputy Head Verger. As Head of Department, the Dean’s Verger shares in the daily care of the Cathedral buildings and belongings with the Property Department, ensures the good ordering of the Cathedral’s liturgies, and has important security, health and safety, and administrative responsibilities. Simon will begin in his new role on Monday 7 July.

The Dean, Mark Oakley, said: ‘We are delighted that Simon is to lead the Vergers’ team after Paul’s long and committed service. He has proved himself over the years to be a valuable colleague - level-headed, kindly, solution-driven, and collaborative. The appointment panel was enthused by his vision of the role and its vital contribution to the life, tone, and work of the Cathedral. We all greatly look forward to working with him as he takes up fresh duties and ensures that all who come into the Cathedral, for whatever reason, are welcomed with dignity.’

Simon commented: 'It is a real honour to be appointed as Dean’s Verger, and I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to lead such an incredible and dedicated team of colleagues. Following in Paul Timms’ footsteps is no small task, and I want to express my heartfelt thanks to him for his unwavering support, guidance, and friendship over the past 17 years. His example has shaped so much of how I approach this work.

I'm excited for the future and the possibilities ahead. I have many ideas for how we can continue to develop the department, staying true to the Cathedral’s mission and spirit. I know the role will bring its challenges, but I’m looking forward to embracing them as we continue to welcome all who come through our doors with care, dignity, and respect.'
