City of London Sinfonia performs Haydn's 'London' Symphony in the second of three Restore and Revive concerts at Southwark Cathedral

“Haydn’s ‘London’ Symphony is not just a chance for everybody to perform together again, but a nod to our name, and a chance to remember how culturally important and resilient London has been and will continue to be.” – Alexandra Wood

Before the orchestra performs a full-scale symphony for the first time in over seven months, you can rejoice in chamber music for string quartet and wind quintet. These chamber works are full of contrasting emotions, from the positive energy of Haydn’s “Fifths” Allegro to the harrowing dissonance of Ligeti’s Lamentoso. You’ll also be able to discover more about the music through living programme notes, in which we’ll invite you to venture round the “forest” cathedral to meet some of the musicians and characters in our performance.

HAYDN String Quartets, Op.76, No.2 (I: Allegro)
LIGETI Six Bagatelles for wind quintet (II: Rubato. Lamentoso)
HAYDN Symphony No.104, ‘London’

The performances (2pm and 7pm) will be presented in our usual seriously informal style. Audience members will be able to roam around the Cathedral and experience the music in varying acoustics around the Gothic and Romanesque building, and pre-booked bubbles of chairs are also available in the Nave.

Safety measures, such as social distancing and wearing masks, are being put into place for everyone's safety. Tickets must be booked in advance.

These concerts will be recorded by and an edited version will be broadcast on our YouTube and Facebook channels at a later date.
