Saturday 5 December

Christmas in the Churchyard

Noon - 4.00pm

The Friends of Southwark Cathedral's popular Christmas Market may not be able to take place this year but you can still join them in the Cathedral Churchyard close to our beautiful Christmas Remembrance tree and participate in socially distanced Christmas carols and music.  We are especially delighted to be joined by members of the Cathedral Merbecke choir as well as other musicians and singers throughout the afternoon.

Festive food and drink will also be available to buy.

Christmas can be a difficult time, especially if you have lost a loved one or aren’t able spend time with friends or family due to restrictions or if you are self-isolating.

This year at Southwark Cathedral we invite you remember those who can't be with us by dedicating a decoration on our Christmas Remembrance tree located in the Chuchyard.  You can come along on the 5 December between noon and 4.00pm to add your message to our tree, or if you are unable to join us please email your loved one's name and message to Kate Dean, Director of the Southwark Cathedral Friends who will add your message for you.  Kate can be contacted by email here

These messages will remain on the tree until Epiphany on Wednesday 6 January 2021. We will also add these messages to our website here from Saturday 5 December.

Candlelit Photography Evening with Organ Music

6.00pm - 8.30pm

Tickets £10.00 available from the Cathedral Eventbrite page here

As we look forward to Christmas, Southwark Cathedral invite all amateur and professional photographers to spend an atmospheric evening taking photographs of the Cathedral lit by candlelight.

With the dark winter evenings, marvel at the glow of hundreds of candles, as they flicker in the peace and calmness of the Cathedral, along with the fading light from outside which will give all of those interested in photography a chance to test their skills and enjoy the Cathedral after hours.

The silence of this holy space will be punctuated not just by the clicks and whirls of cameras, but also by a soundtrack of late medieval plainsong. We are also delighted to announce that the evening will also feature familiar Christmas organ music by our acclaimed Cathedral organist Stephen Disley.

This beautiful and serene event is not to be missed. This is a chance to photograph the Cathedral as it would have been lit during the festive season in the past.
