Holy Week and Easter from Southwark Cathedral

Holy Week and Easter Day are some of the most important days in the Christian year

Since the earliest days in the life of the church, people have marked the events of each day, following Jesus from his triumphal entrance into Jerusalem on the day that we call Palm Sunday, through to the momentous events of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday, the sheer desolation of Holy Saturday and the joy of Easter Day.

This year, however, as we are unable to be in the Cathedral or out in the community, our keeping of these days and of the Triduum, the Great Three Days, will be very different. We hope, however, that you will travel with us, keeping this holy time together.

Services will be broadcast online from the Deanery and from the chapel at Bishop’s House. It is one of the joys of Holy Week that we share in worship with our Diocesan Bishop, Bishop Christopher Chessun. He will be presiding from his chapel in Bishop’s House for the Chrism Eucharist on the morning of Maundy Thursday, at which the clergy will be invited to renew their ordination promises from their own homes, and on Easter Day.

The programme will be as follows;

Palm Sunday

9.00am Morning Prayer

* 11.00am Eucharist with the Reading of the Passion. The service will begin with a wonderful reminder of our Palm Procession from the Borough Market in previous years using photographs taken by our dear and much missed friend, Marion Marples.
