Coronavirus (COVID-19) and Southwark Cathedral

In response to the latest guidelines issued by the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Chapter of Southwark Cathedral has agreed the following

That with immediate effect

  • The chalice will not be offered to those in the congregation at the Eucharist.  Only the President of the celebration will receive the chalice.
  • Communion will be administered at one or more standing stations only and we will not be using altar rails for administration.
  • The Peace will not be shared by physical contact but members of the congregation are asked to greet one another in an appropriate way when invited to do so.
  • Anointing, the Laying-on-of-Hands for healing and blessing will not be administered. Those receiving a blessing at the Eucharist will be prayed over but not touched by the priest.

We still recommend that when people arrive at the Cathedral they wash their hands. Clergy involved in the administration of the Sacrament will continue to use hand sanitiser.

If further advice is given or if the Government imposes any restrictions, the Chapter will reconsider what happens in the Cathedral.

Please pray for all who are involved in the response to this crisis worldwide.

Loving God,

source of healing and comfort,

fill us with your grace,

that the sick may be made whole,

that those who care for us may be strengthened,

that the anxious may be calmed,

and those most vulnerable be protected

in the power of Spirit

in the faith of Jesus Christ our Lord.
