Charles Dickens got to know the Southwark area during the early years of his life when his father was sent to Marshalsea debtor’s prison in 1824

Young Charles regularly visited him which sparked ideas and themes and inspired characters which would later reappear to colour many of the novelist’s best-known works.

On this walk a Cathedral guide will lead you to some of the places associated with Pickwick Papers, The Old Curiosity Shop, David Copperfield and Little Dorrit finishing with a visit to St George the Martyr Church on Borough High Street.

This fascinating tour of Dickens starts at Southwark Cathedral’s Millennium Courtyard, Montague Close, SE1 and lasts about one and a half hours.
