This old Roman road, and main entrance into the City of London from the south via London Bridge, has been a place of travellers and coaching inns, meeting the needs of those on long journeys
Perhaps the best known travellers’ tales associated with the area are the stories of Chaucer’s Canterbury pilgrims whose walk starts from an inn in Southwark.
With the help of a Cathedral guide this walk will explore the stories across the centuries of the numerous inns and the stories associated with them. The sites of several inns will be visited, including the last surviving galleried inn in London and the site of US University benefactor John Harvard’s mother’s inn.
This investigation of the Southwark traveller begins at Millennium Courtyard in Southwark Cathedral, Montague Close, SE1 and lasts about one and a half hours.
