Cathedral Succentor and Minor Canon (part-time)

The Chapter of Southwark wishes to appoint a priest or licensed Reader  in the Church of England who will serve the Cathedral as Succentor and Minor Canon.

The person appointed will assist the Canon Precentor in the preparation and delivery of the liturgy for the Cathedral, will officiate and preach at the Cathedral services and will have a pastoral role with the choristers and young adults in the Cathedral community.

This is an exciting post that will suit a priest or licensed Reader with good musical and liturgical skills, and who has a passion for working within a team in an inclusive environment. The office-holder will receive a half-stipend plus housing close to the Cathedral.

The appointment will be dependent on a satisfactory enhanced DBS check.

Cathedral Archaeologist

The Cathedral Chapter wishes to appoint a Cathedral Archaeologist to act as its professional adviser on all matters for which it has archaeological responsibility as required by The Care of Cathedrals Measure 1990.

Applicants should hold graduate or post-graduate qualifications in archaeology or a related subject; have a strong background in buildings archaeology with proven experience in the study and understanding of historic buildings, in particular with regard to church archaeology; be able to organise and carry out small-scale programmes of archaeological recording and excavation; and be conversant with legislation which impinges on archaeological work, such as Health and Safety, CDM, Home Office regulations concerning human remains, Listing and Scheduling controls and ecclesiastical legislation.

Ideally, you will also have the ability to communicate a passion for the Cathedral’s archaeology simply and effectively to a range of local and national stakeholders and to engage the interest of the local community in archaeological matters.

You will be required to attend meetings of the Fabric Advisory Committee which take place four times a year, usually in the afternoons.

A retainer of £2,000 per annum plus travelling expenses will be paid for attendance at FAC meetings and one Chapter meeting per annum. Additional visits and other work to be carried out at an agreed daily/hourly rate plus expenses.

We are looking to appoint a Fundraiser responsible for raising funds to support the Cathedral Chapter’s priorities, principally endowing the Cathedral choirs, funding major works to the fabric of the Grade I-listed Cathedral and enabling the establishment of new work responding to the needs of the local community in this part of South London.

We are looking for a graduate with extensive fundraising experience, drive and commitment, who can seek out potential donors, prepare high-quality grant applications to trusts and foundations and enthuse all members of the Cathedral community in playing their part in achieving the Chapter’s fundraising objectives.

You should have a minimum of two years’ experience in a fundraising role, possess good communication skills (both written and oral) and be able to handle and interpret financial information. You should also have experience of using fundraising databases, be a good researcher and able to work on your own initiative with minimal supervision.
