Event Stewards

Rate: £9.40 per hour

Southwark Cathedral is looking to recruit a number of new Event Stewards to act as front of house teams at special services, concerts and events.

You will work as part of a team providing a welcome before, during and after each event, and, in conjunction with the Duty Verger, ensuring the health and safety of those attending.

All posts are offered on a casual basis according to availability (but with no guarantee of minimum hours). A period of duty is normally between 2 and 4 hours in length.

The successful applicants will be in sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Anglican Church, have excellent customer skills, able to use initiative and capable of handling large numbers of people with care and sensitivity.

Volunteers Officer (part-time)

Salary: £27,000 pa (£16,200 for 21 hour week)
plus contributory pension

Southwark Cathedral is very fortunate to have a large, highly skilled and committed volunteer workforce of almost 500 individuals. They give generously of their time and skills to enrich and extend the work of the Cathedral and its service to the local community.  This new role has been created to support this large group of volunteers and to be a link between them and the Cathedral’s management team.

You will provide a vital role in assisting volunteer groups with recruitment and management in line with the principles of the Volunteer Charter to which the Cathedral is a signatory, providing a managerial and pastoral focus and celebrating and thanking those who volunteer. You will also organise and deliver training in volunteer skills and help to build Southwark Cathedral as a centre of good practice in volunteering. You will specifically line-manage the Welcomers Team who are responsible for delivering the Cathedral’s “Ministry of Welcome” to visitors.

We are looking for someone with exceptional inter-personal skills, able to deal effectively with people from all backgrounds and of all abilities, excellent negotiation skills and able to handle difficult situations with calmness, professionalism and maturity. Experience of working with, and managing, volunteers and leading a team as well as being a good self-starter with initiative and drive will be essential.

Visits and Tours Officer (part-time)

Salary: £23,500 pa (£14,100 for 21 hour week)
plus contributory pension

Southwark Cathedral is the oldest Gothic church in London and a popular destination for visitors. We are situated in the heart of the vibrant, and every-changing Bankside area close to Tate Modern, Shakespeare’s Globe and The Shard.

The Visits and Tours Officer will work closely with the Retail and Visitor Services Manager to promote the Cathedral nationally and internationally as a visitor attraction and as a means of achieving challenging targets for income growth from the Cathedral’s tourist-related activities. They will handle all tour group administration, supporting the team of volunteer guides, and also undertaking tours on occasions. They will also work as part of a team ensuring that those who visit the Cathedral receive the highest possible quality of welcome and learn about the history and ministry of this place.

You will ideally have some Visitors management experience in the heritage or church sector, and some experience of working with volunteers will be an advantage. You should have good presentational skills, and be able to deliver an interesting tour of the Cathedral.

In sympathy with the aims and objectives of the Christian Church and the Anglican tradition, you will be an excellent administrator able to show, and act on, your initiative.
