Education Centre wins Sandford Award

sandford award logoSouthwark Cathedral Education Centre won an Sandford Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to heritage education and learning within the historic environment.  The Education Officer, Alexandra Carton and Karen Greaves, Administrator were presented with the award on the 28th of November 2012 by Her Grace The Duchess of Marlborough at Blenheim Palace.

The Award states that “The Southwark Cathedral’s education programmes brings to life the history of Christianity, London and Britain for all visitors. Events enable the youngest children to be given the opportunity to think philosophically about their heritage and its impact on contemporary society and communities. This Award is just reward for a diligent, hard working, creative and dedicated team”. 

Alex and Karen are ably supported by an excellent team of volunteers.  Southwark Cathedral Education Centre are proud to receive this award in recognition of the high quality heritage education opportunities they provide to schools.

The Sandford Award recognises and promotes quality and excellence in education provision by sites across the British Isles.  The Awards focus on formal, curriculum-linked education opportunities offered to schools by heritage sites.

Promoting Learning Outside the Classroom

With support from All Saints Educational Trust, SCEC has embarked on a project to explore ways of promoting learning outside the classroom in sacred spaces and to identify factors affecting school visits to places of worship.
